Insulated Joints
The Goldschmidt-Thermit-Group manufactures and supplies a wide range of insulated rail joints for all types of rail traffic using a selection of materials for the fishplates and insulation. The joints are designed for either workshop or site installation.

MT Joint

The MT joint is designed for assembly at site. After cutting the rails, the bolt holes are drilled in the web, the rust in the fishing area is removed by grinding and the joint assembled. To increase the strength and durability of the joint the gap between rail web and joint is filled by an organic mortar. The MT joint is available for a wide range of rail sections and mechanical strengths. Because of its special design it is independent on rail tolerances and can be used in all climates. Its strength meets all requirements for high speed and heavy haul lines.

ETW Joint

The ETW joint is designed for assembly either in the workshop (i.e. as rail closure) or at site (provided in kit form). The insulated fishplates are glued to the rail ends and fixed by high tensile bolts. When manufactured in the workshop, the running surface of the joined rail ends can be hardened to increase the wear resistance considerably. Like the MT joint the ETW joint is also available for different rail profiles. Its strength is primarily dependent on the strength of the fishplates used. Generally the workshop manufactured joint is stronger than the one installed in track.

Special Insulated Joints

The Goldschmidt-Thermit-Group also offers insulated joints made from glass fibre reinforced polyester. They are characterised by a lighter weight and a lower price. They are mainly used in tramways and minor railways. Technical Service of the Goldschmidt-Thermit-Group companies can give reference and advice on installation of the different insulated joints.
