Wear of rails and excessive noise is primarily caused by friction between running surface and the wheel. This can be reduced either by better materials or by lubrication. Lubricating systems can be installed either on the rolling stock (to apply grease on the wheel) or as a fixed unit beside the track (to apply on the rail).
